Anthony Martial at double for Manchester United in Newcastle rout

Manchester United again illustrated their Jekyll and Hyde character by rebounding from Sunday’s dismal defeat at Watford with this smooth-geared, canter of a victory.Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side even gave Newcastle United the advantage of a goal lead during a dire few first- half minutes before upping quality and control to pull away and display a ruthlessness they sometimes lack. England happy with start after ‘tough week’ in South Africa, says Sam Curran

• Stuart Broad and Jofra Archer make it through injury-free• Quinton de Kock says after his 95, ‘It will get more difficult’Sam Curran is an effervescent cricketer but a measured, mature speaker. He almost sounded like an old pro when asked to assess an intriguing day’s play at Centurion, during which he was England’s most effective bowler with a career best four for 57 as South Africa finished on 277 for nine.“It’s been a tough week as a squad and we’re pleased how we’ve stuck together as a group,” Curran said. “It was tough out there, warm with not much breeze. Chelsea stunned after Nathan Redmond wraps up vital win for Southampton

Chelsea had been flying after their victory at Tottenhamon Sunday, which felt like a defining moment for Frank Lampard and the evolution of his young team. This was a crash back down to earth, further evidence of a maddening inconsistency.Southampton’s win was perfectly judged and entirely merited, ignited by a special first-half goal from the 19-year-old Michael Obafemi and driven by their second-half threat on the break. Nathan Redmond scored the goal that made the points safe – he was a thorn in Chelsea’s side – but this was a team triumph, built on the firm central defensive contributions of Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek. The midfielders, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and James Ward-Prowse, were also excellent. Continue reading…

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang salvages draw for Arsenal at Bournemouth

Mikel Arteta had asked for aggression and, while a point at Bournemouth was not quite the way he would have wanted his Arsenal reign to begin, his players dug in and rallied to garner a point in his first game in charge. Arsenal’s disappointing run goes on – they have won just one of their past 14 matches – but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cancelled out Dan Gosling’s opener to get the new era under way on a dank day on the south coast. After watching Saturday’s draw at Everton from the stands, Arteta lived and breathed every kick from the technical area here. Before kick-off a throng of photographers waited for the Spaniard to take his seat in the away dugout and the cameras were trained on his every move but they had a hard job keeping up with him. An animated Arteta spent the majority of the match hugging the touchline, in effect pinballing around his technical area and arching his back in frustration until Aubameyang’s scruffy second-half equaliser. At one point Arteta – his black jacket soaked through from the rain – skipped along in tandem with Bukayo Saka, urging Arsenal upfield. Continue reading…

England’s Sam Curran takes four but De Kock’s 95 rallies South Africa

• First Test day one: South Africa 277-9 v England • Jimmy Anderson strikes with opening ball of four-Test seriesIt was a day of baby-faced aggressors at Centurion. An innings of joyous abandon and 95 runs from South Africa’s Quinton de Kock did little for the health of England’s bowling attack. It was as if De Kock, who seldom looks as if he has been on the planet for 27 years, had been so thrilled with a brand new bat for Christmas he was going to play every shot in the book with it – as well as one or two never seen in the manuals. For England Sam Curran, cherubic in appearance yet fiercely competitive in action, was invaluable to Joe Root. On his best day as an international bowler he finished with career-best figures of four for 57 .There was enough zip in the wicket and in Curran’s bowling for the edges to carry. The notional fourth seamer became Root’s main man. As a consequence England were able to restrict South Africa to 277 for nine after sending them into bat. Continue reading…

Clan Des Obeaux joins King George greats with back-to-back victories

• Nicholls-trained runner follows up last year’s win at Kempton• Lostintranslation pulled up and Cyrname a well-beaten secondThe day before Harry Cobden and Cyrname ended Altior’s 19-race winning streak at Ascot last month, the jockey looked ahead to his potential choice between Cyrname and Clan Des Obeaux, last year’s winner, in the King George VI Chase. “Clan Des Obeaux will definitely improve for his comeback and you wouldn’t be getting off him in a hurry,” he said. “You’d be a little bit worried if he was half a length behind you turning in.”How right he was and, as it turned out, how agonisingly wrong as well, in eventually deciding to reject Clan Des Obeaux for the showpiece event of the Christmas programme here on Thursday, and put his faith in Cyrname instead. Clan Des Obeaux could be called as an almost certain winner with three fences still to jump, just as he could 12 months ago. This time, though, Cobden could only watch as Sam Twiston-Davies swept past him in the home straight on the 11-2 chance, before crossing the line 21 lengths in front of Cyrname, the 5-4 favourite. Andy Murray’s burning ambition has brought him back from brink | Kevin Mitchell

Having been close to retiring after the Australian Open, the Scot had hip surgery and will return to MelbourneAndy Murray struggles to recall the moment in January in Melbourne when he admitted he might be about to play his last tournament. As he gripped his aching hip, his response to the inevitable question dripped with resignation.“Yeah, I think there’s a chance of that,” he said, dabbing at tears on his cheek on the eve of the Australian Open. Thereafter there were long pauses, awkward silences. Few present could remember a tougher moment in our dealings with one of the game’s most complex and emotional characters. Continue reading…
